About Maui Mooring Services:
MAUI MOORING SERVICE established in 1995 utilizes the state-of-the-art MANTA RAY MOORING SYSTEM. MANTA RAY anchors are driven in, not drilled or torqued. NO HOLES ARE DUG, thus there is no disturbance or displacement of soil or sediment during installation. MAUI MOORING SERVICE has been installing the MANTA RAY ANCHORING SYSTEM since 1995. We are experts at what we do – always protecting the fragile marine environment. We are available to install other type(s) of anchoring system- including cement blocks upon special request as per permitted drawing. MAUI MOORING SERVICE has installed moorings in and around Maui including installs at Molokini Crater, Ma’alaea Harbor, South Maui ~ Sugar Beach, Lahaina Harbor, Ka’anapali, and Mala Wharf.
DISCLAIMER: MAUI MOORING SERVICE is not responsible for procurement of any permits as required by government authorities. It is the responsibility of the buyer to acquire and maintain any necessary permits.

MEET THE CREW:
STEVE MADARAS -Steve is a licensed U S Coast Guard Captain with 40+ years experience on and under the water. He has been doing commercial diving since the late 1960’s and recreational dive instruction and underwater photography since 1973. He is the Founder of the CATALINA ISLAND MOORING PROJECT, a non-profit formed to protect the delicate reefs around Catalina Island, California. In 2002 Steve & Diana packed up their cameras, dive gear and mooring equipment and moved to Maui. Steve started MAUI MOORING SERVICE and SCUBA LUV MAUI in the same year.
TIM MADARAS – Tim is one of five Madaras sons, but the only son to choose the ocean as his lifetime career. Tim is a Captain, Scuba Instructor, co-owner of Maui Mooring Service, owner of Tiny Bubbles Scuba, co-owner of Scuba Luv Maui, an Underwater Photographer, and is the Foreman on ALL of MMS projects. There can be current, dirty water, and zero visibility… but between MMS crew and Tim, you will have the “best of the best” securing your boat/mooring system!
DIANA MADARAS – Diana is also a Captain, Scuba Instructor, co-owner of Maui Mooring Service, co-owner of Scuba Luv Maui, and runs the office for Maui Mooring Service, Tiny Bubbles Scuba, and Scuba Luv Maui. You won’t see her running the jack hammer, but she may be sending down tools and equipment to Tim.
ROBERT COLLIER – Recent addition / partner with MMS, Robert has been working in Lahaina Harbor and Maui for over 35 + years. Experienced in all aspects of Mooring Installs and Maintenance, he has been such a great addition.

MAUI’S VOYAGING CANOE IN MAALAEA- After months of being in dry dock, without a safe harbor, Maui’s first voyaging canoe has a new home at Maalaea Small Boat Harbor. The 62′ double hulled Mo’okiha O Pi’ilani was moved Tuesday, the day after its permanent mooring permit was secured.
More than 1000 volunteers helped Hui o Wa’a Kaulua build the canoe in an effort that took more than 18 years. After launching in July 2014, the canoe was first moored in waters off 525 Front Street in Lahaina. But the West Maui location proved vulnerable to high winds and swells.
As part of the search to find a new home, board President Kimokeo Kapahulehua helped create a bill which passed the Legislature to provide moorings for cultural canoes. To complete the documents for a permanent mooring, Kimokeo called on Structural Engineer, Josh Murphree and Steve Madaras of Maui Mooring Service.” – Courtesy Maui news April 9, 2016.
MAUI MOORING SERVICE volunteered their time, hard work, many underwater hours to install four new manta moorings in Maalaea Harbor for the canoe. Mo’okiha O’Piilani will also be used as a floating classroom to promote the Hawaiian culture and to provide education to promote protection of our delicate marine environment….

Installing Environmentally Safe Moorings in Maui!

The anchors are driven into the substrate utilizing waterproof hydraulic equipment. Once driven to the proper depth, we remove the drive steel, pull up on the link chain to rotate the anchor plate to horizontal position. The system works like a giant toggle bolt… only underwater! We then pull/jack the upchain link attached to the anchor plate to reach the desired holding capacity, which we then measure, test and test again.

Underwater inspections are perhaps the most important, but most often the most neglected of all maintenance performed on your vessel. One of the primary purposes of inspections is to detect any deficient conditions which require immediate remedial attention. Inspections on a regular basis prevent large repair bills later or even having your vessel go adrift. Inspections should be scheduled on a regular basis. Boat owners can do this themselves or hire the commercial diving services of Maui Mooring Service.
Sample Mooring Maintenance Program:
A) Monthly
1 – Inspect all buoys and pick up lines for condition.
2 – Clean pick-up line of growth and replace if necessary.
3 – Clean buoy and check for cracks. Replace if necessary.
4 – Inspect and clean exposed portions of the buoy through line and replace as needed.
B) Every 3 months
1 – Inspect downline and housing for wear and tear. Replace if necessary.
2 – Inspect shackle for wear or damage. Replace if necessary.
3 – Inspect manta chain. Examine contact area between chain and shackle.
4 – Inspect anchorage and surrounding area, looking for signs of movement between anchor and surrounding substrate.
C – Inspect/Replace buoy through line and pick-up line if system is used on a regular basis.
D) Every 6 to 9 months
1- Inspect/Replace pin in downline shackle.
E) Every 24 months
1- Inspect/Replace downline if needed.
NOTE #1: If you are in an area where there is rough water, swells, or if you use your boat a lot, it is recommended that all shackles are inspected every 6 months to ensure the shackle will not break.
NOTE #2: All owners are responsible to maintain their moorings. You should have a commercial diver regularly inspect your system. If you are capable of having this done yourself, you will need the following:
1 – Welding equipment
2 – Cutting equipment (both underwater and topside)
3 – Spare parts such as chain, line, locking pin, shackles, stainless steel wire, lift floats, Mooring Buoy, etc.
4 – Access to scuba gear, air fills, lift bags, and an Underwater Scooter for strong current diving.
5 – A small boat or dinghy to work from.
6- Knowledge of the Manta Mooring System
7 – Knowledge of scheduled tidal changes, currents, and general local water conditions. (This is especially true for west Maui and Sugar Beach – Kihei, where the currents can be running in excess of 5 knots. The Underwater Scooter really comes in handy to fight the current, and to move equipment around underwater…)
If you are interested in a proposal to maintain your mooring(s). We can put your mooring on a regular Maintenace schedule, or you can call us as needed.
If we previously installed your mooring, we assume you have been doing regular Maintenace to assure your boats safety, and the safety of others! If not able, we are here to help !
With warm aloha,
